Former Vice President Joe Biden opened up on Oprah Winfrey this week, telling her that one of his biggest regrets in life was not being the President of the United States. And the reason why he never ran? He was desperately afraid to step on the toes of the Clinton cartel in Washington.
“She started off telling me what a good vice president I had been, how much I had done for the country in my career…Then she pretty much asked me straight up if I was going to jump in,” the former Vice President revealed of Clinton in his new book, which he was promoting with Winfrey. “If I ran, I told her, I would not run a negative campaign. She said the same,” but then things took an ominous turn, as Clinton hissed at Biden “some of our supporters can get out of hand sometimes, it would not be me.”
Biden, who at the time was struggling with the rapidly deteriorating health of his son, Beau, said he was stunned by the veiled threat, but that was only the beginning. Clinton supporters soon after the discussion released “a story alleging I was cozy with the banking and credit card industry when I was a senator,” Biden writes in his memoir. “And Clinton backers sent the signal that they would not stop at voting records and policies if I did get in the race.”
A few months later, Beau Biden finally succumbed to his terminal brain cancer, and the Clinton machine was only too eager to take advantage of the mourning father’s grief. In October, 2015, the website Politico unleashed a story titled “EXCLUSIVE: Biden himself leaked word of his son’s dying wish,” which falsely claimed that the VP was planning on making sympathy for his lost son a centerpiece of his campaign.
“I should have seen this coming, I guess,” Biden continues on in his book. “The Politico story exceeded even my worst expectations of what the opposition was going to be like. The idea that I would use my son’s death to political advantage was sickening.”
For Biden, that last blow was simply too much, and after meeting with some of his closest and most trusted friends and advisers he made the decision to abandon his ambitions for the White House, clearing the floor of one of Clinton’s most powerful rivals. Of course, we all know how the story ends, with Clinton defeated, too broken in her room to even come out to give a concession speech, and millions of overjoyed patriots cheering as the right man for the job, Donald Trump was announced as America’s 45th president. America certainly dodged a bullet with that election, and for that, at least, we can all be grateful.
